Monet’s meaning for creating such an optical moving painting, was to involve color based on what he saw and a realistic landscape almost lifelike. The setting is completely different compared to The Starry Night, but correlates respectively to a meaningful purpose singed within. The town signifies his home that he dearly misses in the Netherlands which is why he probably fused it in The Starry Night.Ĭlaude Monet’s painting, Impression Sunrise, was completed during the late nineteenth century in 1872 (“Analysis”). He does not personally witness the town from his room in the asylum, but manages to visually include it in his painting.

The town is symbolized as “peaceful’ for remaining asleep on such a beautiful night where Van Gogh is awake. The final image is the town located at the bottom right behind the cypress tree and underneath the lavishing bright night sky. The cypress tree is what stands out most about the painting due to it being so enlarged but fluctuates meaning from a viewer’s perspective: such as having the shape of a castle. Van Gogh’s intentions for illustrating a cypress tree from his standpoint, was to evaluate the connection in earth and sky with his own thoughts about death- that death is the destination of life’s journey. Cypress trees are usually found in cemeteries or graveyards that associate with a feeling of mourning (“Starry Night”). The cypress tree holds a powerful symbolic definition too. This verse reflects correspondingly to the state Van Gogh was in at the present time imprisonment and unaccepted. The eleven stars represent the older brothers of Joseph who restricted accepting him as one of them after being thrown into a pit, underwent years of imprisonment and sold into slavery. The eleven stars illuminating the night sky, evidently, references a verse in the bible Genesis 37:9. Van Gough created Starry Night in 1889 inside the room of Saint-Remy asylum and is said to have an abundantly large amount of deep representations incorporated into the painting (Shabi). The Starry Night is perhaps one of the most famous works of art done by Van Gogh, aside to The Potato Eaters, that snatched the audience’s attention unexpectedly. Both The Starry Night and Impression Sunrise were created in their own unique way that merges with a deeper insight to the artist’s feelings. A well-known piece of art done by the hands of Van Gogh is The Starry Night that can relate to Monet’s painting, Impression Sunrise. Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh created art moving masterpieces by the usage of oil pastel painting in similar yet different ways.
